Abstraction is the language of consciousness.

Artists are often channels for perspectives and ideas – to connect, clarify and uplift the human spirit.

Frequency/color and geometry also function as a language, like tuning forks… As an artist my highest ambition is to become a tool for life, for people, for individuals.

I also believe that beauty is medicine!

Eva Stensland

Born in New York, I went back there from native Norway in my late teens – the late 70s. Studied Silk Screen at School of Visual Arts, working very experimentally with collages and large works. Participated in all school shows, and some other group shows into the 80s.

Mid 80s: Participated in a high profile group international and inter-disciplinary installation called DPT 2 (The Poetic Theater) at Kunstnernes Hus in Oslo, where she represented film and performance.

The Opening was visual representation “state of Oslo”, – covered by all major media, taking place in the dark, with little lights dotting over a low cement wall -and “too-too” dressed ballerinas dancing to the drum music of a Dutch punk artist…

The final day I was the ghost of hope, painted in silver, in white fluid silk robes – and everything else deconstructed.

1980s-90s: Attended San Francisco State at the Inter-disciplinary Art Department, for a split degree in art/film. Performed with a group called Lethal Gospel, as well as my own performances, and installations. Did a film “Tech God” in collab with the owner of the Dream Theatre in SF, a poetic journey to a more profound reality.

2000-2018: Oslo: private showings of new work, mostly paintings, selling out.

Oslo: My Maori-inspired paintings were bought by a video company from Berlin for video work there.

Oslo/shows at unusual places: punk-club; a colossal book store; and a famous activist lawyers home

My style in this period: symbolic surrealism, human figures and body parts, nature: birds and animals, (swans, moose, eagles, foxes), with psychological and sexual themes.

In recent times, back again in California after a few decades in Europe, I am moving towards abstraction, painting with light, spiritual dimensions, essential reality and structure of dreamworlds, consciousness and reality.

2020/21 Participated in 2 shows at the InnerSpaceLA, downtown.
